How do the four glasses compare?

Every figure below comes from the maker’s own page, except the Glencairn’s size, which the maker does not list and Wikipedia gives as approximate.

Waterford Lismore or a lead-free crystal tumbler?

Lismore is the pattern most people picture when they hear cut crystal. Waterford designer Miroslav Havel created it in 1952, with diamond cuts and upward wedge cuts. Waterford says all of its crystal is produced lead free by the end of 2025, with barium oxide replacing lead oxides.

The Baccarat Harcourt 1841 sits above both for weight. At 1.98 lb for 1.18 cups, it is more than twice as heavy as the Lismore. Baccarat dates the design to 1841 and recommends hand washing.

What does crystal change, and what does it not?

Crystal changes how a glass looks and feels. Adding lead oxide raises the refractive index of glass, which is why cut lead crystal throws light. In the European Union, only glass with at least 24% lead oxide may be labeled lead crystal. Glass made with other oxides, such as barium, zinc or potassium, is labeled crystal glass or crystalline.

Crystal does not change the whiskey. Shape does more: a narrowing rim holds aroma, and a wide tumbler leaves room for a large cube. Our clear ice guide explains how to make one.

Lead crystal and storage

Health Canada advises using lead crystalware for serving food or drinks, never for storing them, and says this is especially critical when serving children or pregnant people. A drink over the course of an evening is the low-risk use. Long storage is a question for decanters, not glasses.

Which should you buy?

  • For whiskey on the rocks and stirred drinks: a cut tumbler. Lismore for the pattern, Harcourt for sheer weight, a lead-free set for daily use.
  • For neat pours and tastings: a Glencairn, or a Norlan if you want something lighter in the hand.
  • For a gift: two tumblers and a large-cube mold. See the gift guide.

The makers behind these glasses are compared in our luxury crystal brands guide. Rocks and highball sizes for mixed drinks are in the cocktail glasses guide, and the full kit list is in the home bar setup overview.

Looking for vintage whiskey glasses?

Older Lismore and Harcourt pieces turn up secondhand, and dating them is its own skill. Our sister site covers vintage whiskey glasses and decanters.

Frequently asked questions

Are crystal whiskey glasses worth the cost?

They are worth it for weight, cutting and clarity, which are about pleasure in the hand and eye. They do not change the whiskey. A lead-free crystal or plain glass tumbler of the same shape holds the same drink.

What is the difference between glass and crystal whiskey glasses?

Crystal has metal oxides added to the glass. In the European Union, lead crystal must contain at least 24% lead oxide, which raises sparkle and weight. Lead-free crystal uses oxides such as barium, zinc or potassium.

Is it safe to drink from lead crystal glasses?

Health Canada advises using lead crystalware for serving, never for storing, and says the risk is lower over a short time such as a meal. It adds that this matters most for children and pregnant people.

Is the Glencairn glass crystal?

Most are lead-free crystal. The glass went into production in 2001 and won the Queen's Award for innovation in 2006. It stands about 115 mm tall and holds roughly 175 ml to the brim.

Can you put ice in a Norlan glass?

The Norlan is built for neat pours. The maker lists about 5.9 fl oz to the rim and recommends a pour of 0.7 to 1.4 fl oz. For whiskey over a large cube, choose a tumbler.
