Choose Waterford or Baccarat for heavy cut crystal barware: tumblers, decanters and ice buckets that sit on a bar for decades. Choose Riedel or Zalto for thin, plain stemware shaped around the drink. For everyday use, lead-free crystal from a maker such as Viski gives the look and goes in the dishwasher.

Waterford: cut crystal with a long history

Waterford was established in 1783 in the Irish harbor town of Waterford by George and William Penrose. The first factory closed in 1853. The story resumed in 1947, when glassmaker Karel Bacik hired Miroslav Havel as chief designer.

Havel created Lismore in 1952. Waterford says it has been the best-selling crystal stemware pattern for more than 60 years.

The material has changed. Waterford states that it has replaced lead oxides with barium oxide and that all its crystal is produced lead free by the end of 2025. It describes the new crystal as slightly lighter in weight, more resistant to heat and twice as strong.

Baccarat: weight and French craft

Baccarat’s Harcourt 1841 is the oldest collection in its archive. The tumbler weighs 1.98 lb for a capacity of 1.18 cups, and the maker lists it as crystal, made in France.

Baccarat says it has marked every creation since 1860. It recommends washing its crystal by hand with warm water or a mild soap.

Riedel: one maker, handmade and machine-made

Riedel’s claim is that the shape of the bowl changes how a drink is perceived. The Sommeliers collection, introduced in 1973, was the first wine glass collection with shapes designed for particular wines. It grew from work by Claus J. Riedel, of the family’s ninth generation, in 1958. Sommeliers is handmade.

Riedel also makes machine-made ranges. Its Drink Specific Glassware for cocktails is machine-made crystal glass, listed as dishwasher safe, with a 2 oz drink marker on the rocks and highball glasses.

Zalto: mouth-blown and thin

Zalto describes its glasses as exclusively mouth-blown, in lead-free crystal glass, with a slow cooling phase after blowing. The company’s roots are in the northern Waldviertel region of Austria.

Zalto is a wine glass maker first. For a bar, its glasses suit a host who pours wine and sparkling wine as often as cocktails.

Buying new crystal online

Look for the maker’s name in the listing, the original box, and the words new or new with box. A listing with no maker named is a style, not the brand.

Frequently asked questions

Is Waterford crystal still lead crystal?

Waterford says all of its crystal is produced lead free by the end of 2025, using barium oxide in place of lead oxides. It describes the new crystal as slightly lighter, more heat resistant and twice as strong.

Can luxury crystal go in the dishwasher?

It depends on the maker. Baccarat recommends hand washing. Waterford says its new formula has been tested for 150 domestic dishwasher cycles but still recommends hand washing. Riedel lists its machine-made cocktail glasses as dishwasher safe.

Which is better, Riedel or Zalto?

They suit different buyers. Zalto glasses are mouth-blown in lead-free crystal glass and very thin. Riedel offers both handmade lines, such as Sommeliers, and machine-made lines that are dishwasher safe.

How do I know a Baccarat piece is genuine?

Baccarat says it has marked each creation since 1860, with an engraving, a red octagonal label or, more recently, a laser-etched logo. Buy new pieces from Baccarat or an authorized seller.
